"Light the Night for Peace"
September 10th, 2007 Palo Alto, CA: American Muslim Voice & Global Peace Partners, along with their Multifaith partners are encouraging all peace lovers to hold candlelight vigils on September 11th as a declaration of our unified quest for peace.
This year, September 11 falls at the beginning of Ramadan, the holiest month in the Muslim faith. Imagine over a million small flames lighting our paths towards a culture of peace, acceptance, mutual respect and harmony. The path begins now on a night that set the tone for fear and loathing. We can change that tone by honoring the victims of 9/11, war and all senseless, violent crimes. We can also create a world we would be proud to leave behind for our children!
When: Tuesday, September 11th 2007 Where: Palo Alto Friends Meeting House 956 Colorado (between Louis and Greer) Palo Alto, 94303 Time: 7:00 PM Multifaith Peace prayers, Vigil at 8:30

The Meaning of Ramadan
Ramadan is a special month of the year for over one billion Muslims throughout the world. It is a time for inner reflection, devotion to God, and self-control. Fasting has many special benefits. Among these, the most important is that it is a means of learning self-control, coming closer to God. Ramadan is also a time for intensive worshipping, reading Quran, giving charity, purifying one's behavior, and doing good deeds. For Muslims, Ramadan is an opportunity to gain by giving, to prosper by going without and to grow stronger by enduring. As a secondary goal, fasting is a way of experiencing hunger and developing sympathy for the less fortunate, and learning to thankfulness and appreciation for all of God's bounties. Fasting is also beneficial to the health and provides a break in the cycle of rigid habits or overindulgence.
