National Invite Your Neighbors to Dinner Day celebrated

Invite Day 2011-7 Invite Day 2011-25

American Muslim Voice celebrated the first National Invite Your Neighbors Day on October 2, 2011. The AMV founding Executive Director Samina Sundas invited her neighbors to a dinner held at Alexander Peers Park in Palo Alto. The AMV initiative was welcomed by the neighbors who attended the dinner.

In a brief speech Samina explained the objecitve of holding the National Invite Your Neighbor Day and  gave colorful scarfs as gifts to the guests.

It may be recalled that on March 28, 2011, joined by multi-faith groups and community organizations, American Muslim Voice Foundation called upon all Americans to join their new campaign to celebrate National Invite Your Neighbors to Dinner Day on the first Sunday of October. Invite Day 2011-20

The AMV initiative - to “expand the sense of community at a grassroots level” among Muslims and Non-Muslims - was announced at a press conference at Cannon House Office Building at the Capitol. The initiative is part of AMV’s larger goal to move Americans from fear to friendship.

“There is no more important path to peace than that which comes from knowing one another as human beings, whole and dignified, through an understanding of what we believe and cherish in common, truth and love. No one does a better job of modeling and supporting us on that path than American Muslim Voice Foundation as exemplified by this campaign for a National Invite your Neighbors to Dinner Day.” Mark C. Johnson, Executive Director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation.

In response to the American Muslim Voice Foundation’s initiative, September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows released the following statement:

Today we stand with the American Muslim Voice Foundation in calling on all Americans to join their new initiative, “National Invite Your Neighbors to Dinner Day”. As family members of those who lost their lives on 9/11 we have an intimate understanding of what happens to our humanity when violence trumps dialogue and understanding.Invite Day 2011-12

Since 9/11 we have learned that there can be no better way to build bridges towards peace among communities than to relate to each other as individuals. Our members have traveled to Afghanistan and Iraq and were welcomed by family members who lost loved ones in the U.S bombing campaigns. The relationships developed made a lasting impact.

As Americans we value the diversity of our nation and have been troubled by the recent spike in anti-Islam sentiment. We know that this diversity, not only of faith but of ethnicity and national origin, is what makes our country so strong. We encourage all Americans to reach out to each other and begin to undermine the crude stereo-types meant to keep us divided. As we pursue an understanding of each other so to do we come one step closer to peace. See More Pictures
