Samina Sundas and Craig Wisener

Samina Faheem Sundas, the founder and Executive Director of American Muslim Voice, received the Jefferson Award for Public Service on January 15, 2008.

The Award giving ceremony was held at Herbst Theater, San Francisco, CA.

Samina was chosen for the Jefferson Award in July 2006. The Jefferson Awards were established to encourage and honor individuals for their achievements and contributions through public and community service.

In 1972, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, U.S. Senator Robert Taft, Jr. and Sam Beard founded the American Institute for Public Service, a 501c3 public foundation, to establish a Nobel Prize for public and community service - The Jefferson Awards.

The Jefferson Awards are presented on two levels: national and local. National award recipients represent a "Who's Who" of outstanding Americans. On the local level, Jefferson Awards recipients are ordinary people who do extraordinary things without expectation of recognition or reward.

Samina was nominated for her tireless work to promote understanding cross-culturally and will be invited to a January banquet with the other Bay Area recipients.

The Jefferson Award recognizes "unsung heroes" for community service. Locally, CBS5 TV news, KCBS news radio and the San Francisco Chronicle choose someone each week for the honor.

Samina Faheem, was nominated for the Award by Craig Wiesner who will join her at the Herbst Theater on the 15th for the award presentation.

From Craig Wiesner:

I'm honored to work with Samina through Multifaith Voices for Peace and Justice and am also proud to call her my friend. You can read about her work in the articles linked to below. In a nutshell, she is one of the hardest-working bridge-builders I've ever met. Since September 11th she has been a tireless champion of interfaith dialogue and friendship, plus, when confronted by injustices faced by any members of our community, she is the first one to jump into action. Given the fear many Muslims rightfully have about being too visible in today's post 9-11 environment, Samina has become one of the most visible examples of living out the Islamic principles of peace, friendship, and justice in the Bay Area and across the nation.

I'd love Samina to receive a stack of congratulations letters, and if you feel so moved, checks (made out to American Muslim Voice), to show her how much our community appreciates her work. If you'd like to be part of that, please mail your letters of congratulations and any contributions you'd like to make (AMV Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 and your donation is tax-deductible), (or you can mail checks and letters to my home for those of you who know my address - and I'll give them to Samina on the big night (January 15th) when she receives her award.)

Make Checks Payable to: AMV Foundation

Mail letters of congratulation (and checks) to:
