Walk and Fast for Peace
American Muslim Voice is co-sponsoring peace walk and fast for peace to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the war in Iraq. The events include Interfaith Service and commitment to fast, community walk for peace and Breaking the Fast for peace. Here is detail of the events:
Interfaith Service and Commitment to Fast: On Sunday, March 16, 2008, persons of all beliefs, traditions, and spiritualities who are committed to peace in time of war are planning an interfaith service at the First Unitarian Church of San Jose, 160 N. Third Street in downtown San Jose , from 5-6 p.m. Participants will demonstrate their unwavering commitment to the sacredness of human life. The world cries out for a common voice for peace from all belief paths. For those who can and wish to, a brief breaking of bread ceremony will take place for those who commit to a 72-hour fast. The fast will end at 7:19 p.m. (sunset) on March 19, the day of the 5th anniversary of the occupation of Iraq.
Community Walk for Peace: From 4-6 p.m. on March 19 scores of peacemakers will participate in a Speak Out for Peace at the MLK Library located at Fourth Street and San Fernando . At 6 p.m. following the Speak Out you are invited to join the fasters who will lead a silent walk for peace past the Federal Building through the community to the South Bay Islamic Association (SBIA), located at 325 N. Third Street near Julian.
Breaking the Fast for Peace: If you agree to fast or you want to accompany the fasters, join the community walk or meet at 7 p.m. at the SBIA for and reflection. We will covenant with one another to live out the deepest calling of all our beliefs - the desire for justice and for peace for all people.
This is the moment in which we must show the greatest possible resolve in rescuing the fundamental values of respect for life and dignity from those who offer empty promises leading to a downward spiral of militarism and domination. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "A time comes when silence is betrayal, and that time has come for us."
